Business Secretary Tells Industry, Construction to Continue

1 April 2020

The UK Secretary of State Department for Business Alok Sharma, has clearly set out the Governments stall in terms of continuous construction during the COVID-19 Outbreak.

In an open letter dated the 31st of March 2020, to everyone in the UK’s construction sector, Mr Sharma paid tribute to those who are “working tirelessly within the construction industry”.

Whilst the Government has advised that wherever possible, people should be working at home, Mr Sharma recognised that for many people working in construction their job requires them to travel to their place of work and they can continue to do so.

Mr Sharma continued to explain that to help ensure that it is safe for people to work in construction, the industry (Construction Leadership Council) had published Site Operating Procedures (SOP). These are in line with recommendations from Public Health England. As health guidance changes (which is often the case of a pandemic) then the SOP will reflect these changes accordingly.
